The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation about The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
