A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground

Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book lodging after getting there, yet once I got there, a big convention was in town and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate around the clock. Not knowing how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I caught a bus into town and found myself drifting towards the casino, thinking it was a place to spend the night in a place that was open 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the next morning, yet, as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more individuals with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared confused since a young woman spotted me loitering in the city center and wondered if I was OK. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she offered I could crash on the floor at her university residence at ANU – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview was the following day. She even offered me some free dinner: one of the stuffed baguettes she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and secure for the evening.

Looking back, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a young woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I was in my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. As a dad now, it astounds me she did that – yet incredibly thankful.

Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of kindness. I hope life has repaid her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more people with such compassion.
